DFW Airport Ground Stop Causes 400+ Flight Cancellations as Severe Thunderstorms Hit North Texas

Severe thunderstorms sweeping across North Texas caused major disruptions at two of the region’s busiest airports on Tuesday, leading to more than 400 flight cancellations and widespread delays.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) temporarily halted flights at both Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Dallas Love Field as dangerous weather conditions moved through the area. Officials issued ground stops due to concerns over lightning, strong winds, and the possibility of large hail affecting flight operations.

At Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, the FAA initially paused incoming flights until at least 3 p.m., triggering more than 350 cancellations and significant delays. Shortly afterward, Dallas Love Field also faced a temporary ground stop, causing dozens of additional cancellations and delays for travelers.

According to aviation tracking data, average delays at DFW reached nearly one hour, while flights at Love Field were delayed by around 30 minutes on average. Aviation officials also warned that the ground stops could be extended depending on how the weather system develops throughout the afternoon and evening.

The storm-related disruptions are impacting travelers during the busy Memorial Day travel period, one of the heaviest travel seasons in the United States. Airlines are working to manage scheduling changes as severe weather continues to affect airport operations across North Texas.

The situation has also created ripple effects across the national airline network because DFW serves as a major hub for American Airlines, while Love Field is the primary base for Southwest Airlines. Delays and cancellations at these airports are expected to affect flights across multiple cities nationwide.

Meanwhile, the National Weather Service warned residents to prepare for potentially severe storms capable of producing damaging winds and large hail throughout the region. Travelers are advised to check directly with their airlines for updated flight information before heading to the airport.
